When we go to a restaurant, is not only about the food, it’s about the service.
At Twin Oaks BBQ in Brunswick, there is a waitress there who loves her job so much, she has been working there for close to 38 years.
In “Our Hometown” Glynn County, we introduce you to Linda Barber; the waitress so widely known, she is almost as famous as the food she serves.
Its lunch time at Twin Oaks BBQ, at that means waitress Linda Barber’s plate is full along with her section.
“You guys ready for this ticket? Here you go…”
Linda never stops moving. As soon as one table opens, more hungry diners sit down to eat. They’re here for some tasty BBQ, but mostly to see Linda.
JoAnn Simpson is a long time friend of the waitress. She always sits where Linda serves.
“Linda is a great waitress, she’s sweet and she’s funny. She knows what you want just about every time.”
How did she get to be so good? Linda has worked at Twin Oaks since high school; nearly 38 years ago. Now, she is a twin oaks staple.
Karen Manning has been a customer at the BBQ joint for as long as Linda has been employed there.
“She’s got spunk, so she gets to be like your close friend. She’s like family. “
For Linda, it’s all about her customers. Some of them started coming in as kids. Now, they’re grown with families of their own.
“When they come, and I hadn’t seen them in five or six years, they still remember me. It makes me feel good that they love me enough to come see me.”
Since her time at the restaurant, Linda has seen three different owners come and go. Dub Waters bought the business back in the 90’s and says employees like Linda are hard to come by.
“She is just like a part of the building; she’s been here so long. Everyone that comes into Twin Oaks knows Linda Barber.”
And when she’s not there, customers know something’s wrong. Linda was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2007, but she says she refused to let it get her down.
“They put in me in the hospital for surgery. I had it, and I was back at work two weeks after my surgery with drain tubes in me.”
Karen remembers Linda’s good attitude.
“She had her surgery and she never missed a day, didn’t seem like. She never complained and made everyone laugh when she wore funny hats.”
Linda jumped back into work because she was afraid her customers wouldn’t get the care she knew she could provide. So to say thank you for a job well done, her customers raised enough money to pay for her treatments.
Because Linda didn’t have insurance, that money helped her win her fight.
“My customers take good care of me and I just love them.”
And for them, Twin Oaks just wouldn’t be the same without her.
If you would like to meet Linda and have some of her famous sweet tea, Twin Oaks BBQ is open daily for breakfast and lunch from 6 AM to 3 PM.
