If it wasn't for three sisters' fond memories on the Canoochee River it could have been a casualty to pollution.
It wasn't too long ago that this now pristine waterway was covered in green algae...courtesy of waste water runoff from Claxton Poultry. But thanks to the Smith Sisters’ tenacity the company was forced to clean up the Canoochee.
Its waters are now among the most pristine in the area.
“It is so peaceful and the tea colored waters of the Canoochee are unlike any other in the country.”
Surrounded by Cyprus trees and white sand banks Riverkeeper Dianna Wedincamp says the river is one of Georgia’s best kept secrets.
“It's a good secret, hopefully we will keep it pristine and clean and beautiful like it is.”
Not just home to enchanting scenery many animals also enjoy the peace and quiet.
“Deer, duck, hog, raccoon, otters, beavers, lots of birds,” lists Wedincamp.
Don't forget about gators. The Canoochee has its fair share.
“My kayak is one of the short ones and a gator went down right in front of me. He was probably 12 feet long and I just had to paddle over him while his bubbles bubbled up around my kayak.”
Creating yet another memory along the Canoochee.
