Ellis Square: Hospitality Center Construction To Being This Week

Ellis Square went from being a hole in the ground to an underground parking garage with dirt on top.  Trees are now planted on top.  It’s beginning to look more and more like the sketches the City of Savannah released several years ago.

Work will begin this week on the hospitality center, which will be located at the northwest corner of the square.  Dabbs-Williams, the company building the hospitality/visitor center, will begin digging the foundation this week.  While there will be more construction, there won’t be any street closures.

Citizens Liaison, Susan Broker, tells News 3 that a Johnny Mercer statue will be placed toward the middle of the square on the west side, while a public art piece will be on the east side across from the statue.

The trees are already in.  The 7, 30-year old oaks were moved from the canal along the Truman Parkway and Victory Drive at the end of April. 

Broker says they’re looking at late November for a completion date.
