Thunderbolt Elementary School has been named the Top Magnet School in the nation by Magnet Schools of America (MSA). The big announcement was made during the 27th MSA Conference, April 26-29 in Charlotte, North Carolina. MSA President Sandra Day and Executive Director Dr. Robert G. Brooks presented the prestigious award to representatives from Thunderbolt Elementary. More than 50 schools from around the U.S. were in contention for the high honor.

Thunderbolt Elementary was selected based on criteria such as a commitment to high academic standards, successful desegregation/diversity efforts, innovative instructional strategies, student achievement and parent/community involvement.

Established in 1968, Thunderbolt Elementary School currently has an enrollment of 524 students. The school features an impressive Marine Science Technology lab, with a fresh and salt-water aquarium and river tank that houses fish and amphibians. These resources offer students a hands-on approach to learn more about the world around them.

Gadsden Elementary School was also nominated for National Magnet School of America consideration and received an award plaque for excellence at the MSA conference.
