Sanford to Beaufort Rotary Club: “I let you all down”
South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford tells members of the Rotary Club of Beaufort “let’s say the obvious, I let you all down and I apologize.“
Sanford says he has been having roving town hall meetings since the revelation in June that he had left the state to spend time with his lover in Argentina. Now Sanford is facing an investigation by the state ethics commission and calls to resign by high ranking members of his own party.
“What’s important for your lives is not what’s going on in Columbia right now, but where do we go from here? That’s the question,“ Sanford says.
The governor says in a strange turn of events, this might be the most productive legislative session during his tenure. “There are always these political overtones about whether the governor will be running for president,“ Sanford says. “Well in my case that won’t be happening.“
Sanford says in the last few months everywhere he goes “there are three TV cameras. So hopefully, they will keep rolling while we talk about issues important to you and the state.“
Sanford fielded about 8 to 10 questions but none were about the controversy of his personal life. The questions concerned sales tax issues, the new Jasper port and the economy
