The Department of Defense announced says a Fort Stewart soldier has died after his patrol was hit by an improvised explosive device.

The military says Spc. Roberto A. Hernandez II, 21, died Tuesday in Paktya, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Department of Defense says Hernandez died of his injuries after his mounted patrol was attacked by an IED and small arms fire.

Hernandez was assigned to the 549th Military Police Company, 385th Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne), Fort Stewart, Georgia.  He was from Far Rockaway, New York.
