Mother of Imperial Sugar Burn Victim Speaks Out
Six months after the explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery three of the burn victims still remain at the Augusta Burn Center.
Two of them Malcolm Frasier and Lawrence Manker are in critical condition.
The third man, Paul Seckinger will soon be coming home.
News Threes Alice Massimi sat down with Paul's mom, whose been by his side since the night of the tragic accident.
The first day of school it's also Karen Seckinger's first day back to work since the explosion.
At times she says it feels like that horrible night was a lifetime ago... then there are the times it feels like it was just yesterday.
“The television was on and my husband called me in there and said come here. We went in there and Morgan was with us because her daddy was working nights, and he said there's been an explosion at the sugar refinery,” recalls Karen.
She tried to call her son, Paul, a mechanic at the plant ... But there was no answer.
It wasn't until several frantic hours later that Karen found out where he was.
“They told us he was about to get in a helicopter and get flown to Augusta that's all we knew.”
When she arrived at the Augusta Burn Center doctors told her Paul was burned on 80 percent of his body.
Asked where he was burned, Karen says it's easier to tell you where he wasn't.
“For almost three months from day to day we didn't know because there would always be something, a new infection, or his blood pressure would drop and they couldn't get it to come up or his fever would spike and the would have to pack him with ice.”
At his side throughout it all, Karen says she's worn a ribbon on her shirt, a sign of hope and one she won't take off till her son comes home.
“I just kept thinking God knows what I can stand and I think he knows I can’t stand anymore.”
Thankfully after three months of not knowing what the future held, Paul started to get better, six months later his family is breathing a sigh of relief.
“He is doing very well. Hiss projected date to come home is next Friday August 15th.”
With no desire to go back to the site Karen says Paul has begun to ask about the tragedy.
Wanting to see pictures he's pointed out where he was.
“I don't know that he still can really grasp how sick he was.”
A long journey, Karen is happy her son is finally coming home.
