Breast Cancer Patient Says Laughter Best Medicine

All month long we’ve been observing Breast Cancer Awareness.
Bringing you the stories of survivors and showing the numerous efforts being made to find a cure. Tonight News Three’s Alice Massimi has the story of one woman diagnosed with the disease who says laughter is the best medicine.

DeeDee Miller’s smile brightens up any room she’s in.
It’s that positive attitude that keeps her going.
In August she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer.
“I found the lump went to the doctor and they immediately took action,” says DeeDee.
Undergoing a double Mastectomy and in the midst of her second month of chemotherapy… the only difference many folks see in her is her hair.
“My hair, no hair that was something. I had to shave my head 18 days after my first treatment.”
But through it all she’s continued to smile and even laugh about it.
“I don’t have to worry about shampooing and conditioning and blow-drying, so it was really a relief and actually I have a pretty nice head.”
She says it’s faith, family and friends that’s kept her strong… especially her sister, a
nine year breast cancer survivor.
“I just said if she can do it I can do it because when she went through it she was my hero.”    Luckily DeeDee has a good prognosis… but it doesn’t stop her from being scared at times.
She doesn’t like to focus on those feelings but rather spending time with her family.
Enjoying the simple things and thanking god for it all.
“I have nothing to complain about. I am blessed.”
Because DeeDee detected her breast cancer through a self exam she urges every woman to do them on a regular basis.
That’s why we’ve set up Buddy Check 3.
It’s a partnership with St. Joseph’s Candler.
Joining is simple and free.
Just choose a buddy and mark the third of each month on your calendar.
Then remind your buddy to do a breast self exam.
If you find a lump, call your doctor.
To join call 912-819-2277 or 1-866-s-j-c-2-win.
