Mammography Fund Helps Hospital Employee
Hospital Supports Employee In Need
A new employee at St. Joseph's/Candler found a lump in her breast. She did not have insurance, but thanks to a mammography fund she got the treatment she needed.
Remember me ... special words for 24-year-old Amy Adams. The newly hired Music Therapist at Saint Joseph’s/Candler works to make a connection with cancer patients through music. It’s a way of offering counseling and support. “I help them along the whole spectrum of the cancer process from being diagnosed to survivorship. I also work with a lot of end of life patients, helping them through the dying process,“ says Amy Adams. It wasn’t long ago that Amy became concerned about her own health. “About a week after starting to work I found a lump in my upper breast wall.“ Amy immediately leaned on her employer for help.
“Since I’m a contract employee with the hospital I don’t have hospital benefits, so I was in the process of getting private insurance for myself .“
The Mammography Fund at Telfair Pavilion was her answer. The money is from people in our community who give unselfishly, remembering the uninsured and underinsured. After applying, Amy got a free mammogram.
“I was very scared that I was going have to put off getting checked out until I had insurance, which could have been months, and it ended up being that way. And so knowing that there’s something out there for people like me and people who really cannot afford and haven’t been to the doctor in years, this is perfect for them.“ Her test results came back negative . That’s a relief for Amy. “It’s good to know that there are people around me that you know if it had turned out to be cancer that there are people who had been through it themselves obviously working with patients all day and they would have given me the best support.“ Music to her heart. Now Amy can go on doing her passion, encouraging cancer patients to keep the faith.
