"Little Miss Sunshine" title player Abigail Breslin plays Kit Kittredge, An American Girl, based on the popular dolls which enchanted millions of pre-teen girls.
The setting is Cincinnati during the depths of the depression where she escapes the dire times up her tree house with her friends.
Kit aspires to be a journalist a career encouraged by her father, played by Chris O’Donnell, a soon-to-be out of work car salesman.
Her home becomes a boarding house when times get tougher and one of the eccentrics they meet is a traveling librarian, played by Jon Cusak, he befriends two young hobos, as homeless people were called back then.
Meanwhile, the aspiring reporter has no qualms about going straight to the top, the editor of the Cincinnati Register, played by Wallace Shawn.
Julia Ormond, who's never achieved the stardom predicted for her, plays her mother who by this time has taken in half a dozen boarders including Ali McBeal's Jane Krakowski, a magician played by Stanley Tucci and Glenn Headley.
