When Conan O’Brien took over as host of the tonight show in may, it didn’t mean that former host Jay Leno had to move into the “old comedian’s retirement home.“
In fact, his role at NBC has become even bigger: to carry an hour of primetime programming five nights a week.
It was back in may that Jay Leno said his “Tonight Show” farewell.
Now, after a summer break from TV, he’s preparing to move into primetime next month.
“Elements from The Tonight Show that people like, the monologue will stay, headlines, jaywalking, some of those pieces, stupid criminals and whatnot. The difference is you’ve just got to carry the comedy through the whole hour,” Leno said.
Leno’s comments came as part of a round of interviews in Pasadena Wednesday to talk up his new 10pm comedy show.
Leno says it’ll be an alternative to 10pm dramas on the other networks.
NBC’s got plenty riding on Leno, turning over five hours of valuable
Prime time real estate to the comedian.
Leno says he may not beat his drama competition from the outset, but he expects to succeed in the long run.
The Jay Leno Show debuts Monday, September 14th.
