With instant access to information at our fingertips, it’s hard for many of us to imagine life without the comforts of a computer.  From shopping… to banking… to school work… almost everything can be done online. But for a number of folks, it’s a convenience they simply can’t afford. News 3’s Kim Gusby tells us how one local program is closing the digital divide and helping the environment by refurbishing old computers and -giving them away- to folks who need them.

2009 Earth Day Festival helps citizens be green and save green

The City of Savannah says so far its curbside recycling program is a success. Last month they collected close to five hundred tons of recyclables.
Some other cities like Port Wentworth have followed suit but for some reason the county has not.
Now the same group who made curbside recycling a reality in Savannah is hoping to do the same in the county.
“3 On Your Side” Community Reporter Alice Massimi spoke with the group about their effort. 

An event Saturday at Lake Mayer in Savannah prompted many to come out to get rid of electronic equipment like computer monitors.  A recycling company from Atlanta promises all materials are broken down and reused.

Do you have an old mattress you want to get rid of? Mattresses are full of materials and chemicals that are decidedly not eco friendly: formaldehyde, polyurethane, petroleum based materials, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), and so on.

For more than three months now the City of Savannah has been recycling.

Profits will not amount to much right now . The economy deciding factor to put recycling plan on hold.

Local residents can recycle their old televisions free of charge during the Big Switch Television Recycling Event this Saturday at Lake Mayer.

It’s been a week since the City of Savannah kicked off its recycling program.
To address some of your concerns, News Three’s Community Reporter Alice Massimi sat down with the City of Savannah’s Head of Sanitation.

Today and yesterday we received numerous calls from people on the southside of Savannah who said there were recyclables were never picked up.  We took their concerns to the city and found out how they planned to address it.

History was made as collection for the city’s curbside recycling gets underway.  Savannah’s Sweetwater Station subdivision was the first neighborhood on today’s collection route.

Starting Monday in Savannah, it won’t be a choice anymore when it comes to recycling.  The city is officially kicking off its curbside recycling program.

It’s not just a new year but a new page in history for the City of Savannah.
Starting on Monday the city will begin recycling.

The City of Savannah makes history Monday, Jan. 5, with the first day of curbside recycling collection. Monday pickup covers most of Savannah’s southside.

Door-to-door delivery of the new curbside recycling carts began Friday, November 14th with the first 3,000 carts getting distributed.

Savannah Recycling begins in January. It will take about a month for some 48,000 households to receive their carts.

First United Methodist Pre-K and Kindergarten placed 19th in a national recycling event, competing with more than 1,000 other schools.
