Hundreds of Volunteers Help Build Savannah Playground in One Day

A playground within walking distance of every child in America, it’s the goal of a national group known as Kaboom.
This year alone they’ve built more than one hundred and eighty playgrounds throughout the country. Today our area was the lucky recipient.
News Three Community Reporter Alice Massimi was there as hundreds of volunteers helped make this neighborhoods dream come true.

Bit by bit these volunteers are building a pathway to imagination… hope and a sense of community.
“So many people, so much is happening it means so much for the families in this community. I mean it is just overwhelming,” says an emotional Peter Doliber, the Director of the YMCA.
Especially for the West Broad YMCA which almost shut down a couple of years ago.
“It’s just a miracle the whole community is out here working. It shows that we are back. The city and county investing in us and the community supporters who would not abandon it all their hard work it is coming to fruition,” exclaims Doliber.
It may not look like much now… but in only a couple of hours, with some fresh coats of paint, and hard work… it will be a playground.
All thanks to the Home Depot and hundreds of volunteers… united in one common cause…
“It’s all about the kids anything that is positive for the kids and the community. I am all there for it if we do these projects we can get these kids motivated to get them out of the streets doing something positive versus something negative,” says James Jones who spent the day volunteering.
The hope is that it will be more than just a place to play…. it will bring the community together…
All it takes is one look around to see it’s already begun to work its magic.
“It’s a moving experience knowing one day there is going to be a bunch of kids playing on this. Maybe I will return when they get it all done and maybe they will let me go down the slide I don’t know,” smiles Chris McGuire also a volunteer.
