Artists and designers will join the City of Savannah during a news conference at 11:30 a.m. today to highlight two upcoming events that showcase creative re-use of discarded objects. The event will be held at the Recycling Education and Dropoff Center, 11 Interchange Court, off West Gwinnett Street. Artists and designers will show off their pieces, and be available for media interviews.

The Rethreaded Fashion Show will showcase the works of local clothing design students who use discarded materials, such as potato chip bags, to create clothing and accessories. The fashion show, sponsored by the City’s Recycling and Litter Services Department, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, as part of Greenfest at the Charles Morris Center, 10 E. Broad St.

The redeSign art project showcases discarded City of Savannah street signs that have been transformed into beautiful works of art. The City of Savannah has partnered with New Moon of Savannah to donate damaged street signs to dozens of local artists, who use the signs as canvases. The redeSign project will be on display to the public May 11-18 at 312 W. Broughton St.

Both shows highlight the concept of re-use—finding new life for objects that might otherwise end up in the landfill. At Tuesday’s news conference, officials will demonstrate more practical ways that citizens can re-use everyday items.
