It’s the nation’s oldest, largest, and most widely recognized grassroots based civil rights organization and this year, it marks 100 years of service.

Founded Feb. 12. 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) now has more than half-million members and supporters throughout the United States and the world.

As the national organization celebrates a huge milestone, Savannah’s local chapter marks a century of bold dreams and big victories.

On Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. the Savannah Branch NAACP will host its annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet. The event will be held at the Savannah Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Entirely dependent on the voluntary contributions of concerned individuals, corporations and foundations, the Freedom Fund Awards Banquet has remained attuned to the times.  Founded on the principle objectives of ensuring the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens and the elimination of racial prejudice, the NAACP seeks to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic processes.

The annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet brings people of goodwill together to assess their progress in the field of human relations.  Each year, the organization honors people from our community for their contributions to the mission and principle objectives of the NAACP.
