Savannah Metro Police’s Mounted Patrol Unit Possibly on Chopping Block

The task is to cut about two million dollars from the City of Savannah’s Public Safety Budget.
The city’s already created a team to look at possible savings.
One of the items they’re suggesting…. the Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit.
While an official recommendation to cut the twenty year old unit hasn’t been made… News Three has learned it’s at the bottom of a very long list of priorities.
Community Reporter Alice Massimi spoke with the city and the head of the Mounted Patrol Unit to find out what this could mean for the city’s safety.

Hundreds of Volunteers Help Build Savannah Playground in One Day

A playground within walking distance of every child in America, it’s the goal of a national group known as Kaboom.
This year alone they’ve built more than one hundred and eighty playgrounds throughout the country. Today our area was the lucky recipient.

Savannah’s Squares Recognized Nationally

Those of us who live in Savannah know how special our squares are, but now they’re receiving national attention.
The American Planning Association has named them one of the Top Ten Best public spaces in the country.
They join the ranks of past recipients like Central Park in New York City, and Union Station in Washington D.C.

Cut Shuts Down Legal Rooming House Citing Safety

Two weeks ago News 3 joined the City of Savannah as inspectors checked out a suspected illegal rooming house. While it had some safety issues, it turned out to be legal.
The owner of the building agreed to make the needed changes, and he was issued a subpoena to make sure those changes were in fact made. But when the owner showed up in court on Monday, he says the city had changed their tune.
News Three’s Community Reporter Alice Massimi met with the owner and the City to find out what’s going on.

Working for a Cure to Sickle Cell Anemia

It’s fair to say some of you have probably never heard of Sickle Cell or if you have you’re not really sure what it is.   
Well Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetic disease that affects the red blood cells. Those cells carry oxygen throughout our bodies. 
It can cause severe pain, strokes, skin ulcers, and organ damage.   
In the United States most people suffering with sickle cell are African American.
Here in Savannah it’s estimated there are at least two hundred cases of Sickle Cell.
News Three’s Alice Massimi has the story of one of those cases and how it’s empowered a family to work for a cure.
