The Federal Reserve Board has adopted rules to prohibit banks and credit unions from automatically paying overdrafts and then charging customers fees for the transaction.  Some consumer groups are applauding it as a good “first” step but say even more protections are needed.

The latest survey from the Federal Reserve says banks are still raising interest rates on credit card holders, even on their best customers.  It’s all in anticipation of the CARD act which is set to take effect in February.  However, some in Congress have voted to move up the effective date to December 1, saying financial institutions are abusing the grace period they were given to prepare for the new law.

House votes to push up effective date of credit card law to December 1st

The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to push up the effective date of the new credit card reform act. The bulk of the law was supposed to go into effect in February,but some lawmakers say banks have used the cushion of time they were given to keep hurting consumers by increasing credit card interest rates.

A new report on credit card issuers says not one of the major banks is currently meeting the obligations required in the upcoming credit card act, set to take effect next year.  It says consumers may want to shop around at a credit union instead.  The study also says that major card issuers collected an extra 10 billion dollars in interest rate hikes between 2007 and 2008.

Some in Congress want to extend unemployment benefits again to help workers who still can’t find jobs.  That may help those in our area.  New figure show that a few less people are being laid off, but those out of work are having to look longer to find a job.
