SAVANNAH, Ga.—Authorities have evacuated an office building at St. Joseph’s/Candler off of Paulsen and DeRenne. About forty employees were in the building at the time.
Bob Staples, manager of safety and security for Candler, tells NEWS 3 an employee received a letter in the patient billing department that contained a brownish substance in it. The hospital immediately notified CEMA and hazmat. Staples says the return address is a law enforcement agency, but could not specify which one.
No patients are housed in the building that was evacuated.
Portions of Paulsen have been blocked off near DeRenne to allow access for emergency vehicles.
Crews are in the process of turning off the air conditioning units and have isolated the substance. They are now in the process of determining what the substance is.
