Effingham Man Arrested in Halloween Shooting

Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting which occurred late last night in south Effingham County.
At approximately 9:00 pm, Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Hawthorne Drive in Conventry Subdivision on a report of a person shot. Deputies located the victim, identified as Limus Joshua Jr. of Guyton, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper thigh. Joshua was transported to Memorial Medical Center where he remains.
Shortly after the shooting, deputies arrested Derrick Newberry, 32, of Guyton. It is believed that Newberry and Joshua got into a verbal altercation which turned violent when Newberry shot Joshua.
Newberry has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Newberry is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail.
