Elderly Woman Charged After Taking Neighbor’s Dog

(SAVANNAH, GA) An elderly Savannah woman who says she was trying to do a good deed for an animal - is facing criminal charges. She took a dog from her neighbor’s yard - a dog she says was being neglected. Ann Wylene Lam faced a judge in Chatham County Recorder’s Court today - but her case was continued until next week.

Ann Wylene Lam thought she was headed to jail Tuesday morning - she already spent 6 hours there back on October 28th when she was arrested - charged with criminal trespass and theft for taking a dog from her neighbor’s property.  “I was trying to save a dog and get attention for this animal, that’s all I thought - no I did not know I was doing anything wrong - I did not know it would go this far,” says Lam.  She says the dog was emaciated, chained to this tree so tight it left sores on its skin, and seemed to have a lame leg.  Lam says she first noticed the dog as she walked her dog along her street each day, initially she’d just throw treats over the fence, then she asked the owners if she could help.  The next day she says she bought a 10-pound bag of food - fed and watered the dog - then gave the rest of the food to its owner.  She continued to keep an eye on the situation as she walked her dog around the neighborhood.  Lam says, “I didn’t see her feed him or water him, so then I started just going on the property and doing it all myself.”

She says that went on for nearly 4 months, during which she says she contacted police and Animal Control and actually saw a Sheriff’s deputy leaving the property one time.  Nothing changed - until that day near the end of October.  “He’s not eating, he won’t pick his head up out of his bowl, he’s giving up, he’s just quitting,” says Lam.  But she didn’t - she called a friend to help - then went into the yard with bolt cutters and cut the chain.  After cleaning him up, they called Animal Control - Ann Wylene Lam was arrested a short time later… But she says she’d do it all again, “Truthfully yes, truthfully yes - I would - there’s no way I could walk by that dog and not do it again. So, if they have to put me in jail, they have to put me in jail.”  Metro Police tell us the dog died. They say Animal Control tried to adopt it out, but it was in bad shape and got sick.  We also tried to talk to the dog’s former owner - but no one answered the door.  Metro Police say she has been charged with neglect, tethering, and not having up-to-date shots on the dog.

deb21 Please review your comment on Dec 14 that you posted!  Now you say you are just a co-worker but that comment on Dec 14 sure sounds a bit different than todays comment.  I think you are the liar and certainly the “IGNORANT” person that you are calling me.  You said you know htat he is a good person and loved his dog and his children well compare these two comments as everyone else has!  LOL

deb21 you sure do use the word “IGNORANT” often to just be a person whom does not know Mr.Crosby but a co-worker! Would it be fair to say that Mr. Crosby is ignorant because I think he should have known that ANIMALS must have SHOTS and TAGS and that has been a law for years and years. How do you know so much about him and how comfortable his dog looked on the sofa!  Sounds like someone is telling lies.  In your opinion I may be “IGORNORANT” but I am retired with college education and my children are college graduates that own their own bussiness and certainly do not have a home that looks like Mr. Crosbys employer’s. If that interview was not not at Mr.Crosbys it sure looked like the one I looked at from driving past Mrs. Lam’s.

May I also tell you about my “IGNORANCE” as you say I am I have put in alot of volunteer work with negelected and abused animals.  If you a co-worker and do not know Mr Crosby where would get his tatoo information.  Did that conversation just come about at a coffee break or lunch?

Let me assure you that at 64 or before you will have wrinkles and to me that was an insult to Mrs. Lam. Would it be fair to say that maybe your “MOTHER” has wrinkles!  Wrinkles are wisdom of the years GOD has blessed us with.

I also think we all have come to the conclusion that deb21 and jojod911 has to be Mr. Crosby and his girlfriend since the only DEFENDING comments are from these two.  Let me as ignorant as I may be to you that tethering, no shots, no tags, is NEGLECT!!!!

Mrs Lam did not want the police involved she just wanted the animal to get help.  WHO CALLED THE POLICE MR. CROSBY AND HIS GIRLFRIEND!

You keep saying that she was stealing but “GIRLFRIEND” you watched her from inside—why did you not go outside and ask her what she was doing!

Dianne, just because someone is doing an interview, doesn’t mean it’s at their house, he did his interview at his employers house, and that is his employers boat and his employers half fenced yard and have you ever seen homemade tattoos? Most people can recieve one for free if you have an aspiring tattoo artist in the family. Hope you don’t feel too ignorant.

Sorry to dissapoint you Barsinister but Mr. Crosby and I are not even friends, we just share the same employer. You people are all hypocrites, you would have a man prosecuted for supposedly neglecting a dog (which he was fined not for neglecting but tethering, no shots, and no tags) but not prosecute a woman who knew it was wrong to get bolt cutters and steal a dog instead of notifying the police? The only reason John Crosby let Ms.Lam throw treats and come over and play with his dog is because he didn’t think she was capable of stealing him.

Jeez I can’t wait till I get my first sign of wrinkles, maybe I’ll go steal a kid that I think is being neglected.

Sorry just having a hard time with Mr Crosby having Mrs Lam arrested. Looking at his video again listening and reading how he could not afford vet care.  Notice his TATOOS they are quiet expensive that money could have gone to the pets care and the BOAT very expensive to maintain—SELL IT Mr. Croasby that should help your finances and stop TATOOING that would be money in your pocket as well.

SORRY!  Just can’t say Mrs. Lam broke the law The law definition of THEFT BY TAKING COULD BE ANYTHING BUT A SICK CHILD OR DOG but that is what the LAW is defined THEFT BY TAKING. She was helping a sick animal that she had been watching go down for months, even bought food, and you people told her she could feed him! Mrs Lam’s interview was heart breaking, she bearly held herslef together not to cry.  You are the one comparing a sick animal to THEFT BY TAKING JUST BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A CHILD JUST AN ANIMAL! Many people judge a persons character by the way they feel about ANIMALS!  I sure hope if your mother is aged that no one would put her in jail.  Mrs Lam is a senior and this could have been worked thru.  Like I have said before the quilt of animal abuse is the only reason Mr. Crosby persued to have her arrested.  Take a good look at the conditions the dog was living in even though there was a fenced yard.  I still like to know why was the dog CHAINED with a FENCED YARD?  MR> CROSBY FIRST BROKE THE LAWW!!!!

I never once said the guy that owned the dog was not wrong, But that does not make what Ms. Lam did not breaking the law either. She does not have the athority to go on to someone elses property and take something that doesn’t belong to her. How hard is that for you people to understand?? If you don’t believe that, then stop calling the police when soemone takes somthign that belongs to you!!!

I also want everyone to notice that Mr Crosby had a fenced yard so why was the dog chained?  Please everyone look at his video.

I was just viewing Mr Crosbys video and he has a very nice boat in the back of him but he has no money to have taken the dog to the vet—I would have sold the boat and found me a place to have kept the dog “HIS BABY” inside and vet care.  How can you afford the boat with such financial problems. Just one excuse after another and smiling thru the interview—hope the judge takes notice that pictue of your nice boat.  You did not want it to go this far had Mrs Lam 64 years old arrested. Can you understand that she was only concerned and DID NOT STEAL YOUR DOG. You could have worked it out with Mrs Lam and the dog still died after her attempt to save him. I want all of you to look at his video notice his nice boat behind him and his laughing during the interview.  Still the issue is that he FIRST BROKE THE LAW and wants to call Mrs Lam breaking the law.  Just everyone realize that if she is fined that a collection will be taken to pay her fines. But he calls himself the victim the dog was the victim and good people try to come to assist victims in which Mrs Lam did so. But why is no one coming to the aid of Mr. Crosby and his GIRLFRIEND that will not happen and we all will see she gets all the support she needs. Lets also recall a sherriff going out to the property and leaving without seeing that this dog was in foul living.  Just take a good look as the dog house—real nice dog house so disgusting .  Lets pray the judge takes all that into consideration.  Mrs Lam I would love to meet you, hug you and tell you that you did nothing wrong.

Deb 21 I do not believe any one of us in this community would care or want to know Mr Crosby after the trouble he has caused to Mrs, Lam and the abuse to his dog that was suffering.  Mrs Lam only was looking out for the best of the aninal—SHE FED THE DOG WITH PERMISSION!  Mrs. Lam was scared when she had the dog removed.  I could not imagine living next door watching a poor dog in pain.  The mange was not the main concern the dog had WORMS, NO SHOTS, and WAS CHAINED WHICH IS AGAINST THE LAW!!  You want to say that Mrs. Lam broke the Law well when the dog was chained is when the LAW WAS FIRST BROKEN!  She broke the law in concern for the dog suffering. I just believe I would have thanked her as she could have called the POLICE AND ANIMAL CONTROL.  She did not want trouble but because of Mr Crosbys neglect of the animal that HE IS QUILTY FOR is the only reason he and his girlfriend has caused Mrs. Lam much grief. Mr. Crosby and his girlfriend filed these charges thnking that it would justify his and girlfriends cruelty to the animal.  If he loved this dog as well as he and his GIRLFRIEND has said then he would have found the dog a home where he did not have to be chained.  GET REAL HERE DEB21 there is just no excuse all you have is excuses for cruelty to an ANIMAL.  PLease never own another one just keep having children for Mr. Crosby since he does a better job payng child support and visiting his other children and paying CHILD SUPPORT.  If you cannot afford medical attention or JUST MAINTENANCE ROUNTINE SHOTS then you or no one else should own any kind of animal is that hard for YOU TO UNDERSTAND or your excuses for why the dog was chained sounds better to you but not to hundreds of others that believe there is NO EXCUSE no matter how much you pay or care for your children.  By your comment of him paying child support tells me and others all he can afford is his children so why would the dog have to suffer because he is in financial distress.  He COULD NOT AFFORD THE ANIMAL OR ANY OTHER ANIMAL.  Oh one more thing WHY DID HE SIGN THE DOG OVER FOR ADOPTION IF HE TOOK SUCH GOOD CARE OF HIM AND LOVED HIM!  You are a person passing the buck and putting all the blame on Mrs. Lam and by the way Deb21 I do not even know Mrs Lam personally only by her kind heart trying to save an animal.  Save a Life for pets is an organization here that does not tolerate animal abuse as well. The trouble you both have caused Mrs Lam will come back to the two of you.  Mr Crosby will pay fines CAN HE NOT AFFORD THAT EITHER.  All your excuses and protecting Mr Lam will not avoid the FINES IN COURT!!!!
