A Hilton Head man is behind bars, facing four counts of animal cruelty.  Authorities say two adopted dogs were tortured to their death, another one abused and the man behind it all was recently arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

He’s identified as 22-year-old Alexander Greger of Hilton Head.  The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says Greger’s girlfriend initially called them on December 10th to report a November assault against her in which she said Greger struck and bit her after she tried to stop his violence against their dog.  That dog, a German Sheppard named Jake, was shot several times and drowned in a bathtub.  Greger’s girlfriend also told investigators of another dog he adopted, abused, and killed.  Both dogs’ remains were found buried at different locations in Southern Beaufort County.

On Friday, warrants were obtained for Greger on charges of four counts of animal cruelty, one for the abuse and killing of the dog, Jake, one for the abuse and killing of the dog named Tag, and two for the abuse of his girlfriend’s dog, husky named Paddy.  Two days earlier, authorities say he was also charged with Criminal Domestic Violence.

WSAV will follow this story as it develops.
