Death Deliberations Today for Troy Davis

ATLANTA (AP) - A man sentenced to death for killing a Savannah
police officer will ask Georgia's parole board for clemency Friday
at a closed-door meeting.
Troy Davis, who is scheduled to be executed Sept. 23, says he
should be granted a new trial after several witnesses who testified
against him recanted their statements.
Activist groups including Amnesty International have also called
on the state to delay the execution until the Supreme Court
discusses the case later this month.
Davis was convicted of the 1989 murder of 27-year-old officer
Mark MacPhail, who was working off-duty as a security guard at a
bus station.
