Beach Chorus Fine Tuning For Presidential Inaugural Festival.
Savannah Choir to Compete in D.C.
Getting ready to perform, and planning a survival strategy for the weather and hours of standing.
These Beach High School Chorus members are perfecting their voices for perhaps one of the biggest competitions they’ve ever participated in. Director James Kirk and his students are competing against schools from around the country. The competition is being held to celebrate the inauguration of a new president. “It’s going to be a historical event. The first black president that we’re going to have. I think we’re going to look back on it , and it’s going to be great,“ says Antwan Minor.
These chorus members are not only competing against musical peers. Health and Physical Education Instructor Donna Kelly is making sure the students will not have to sing the blues about the cold weather and all the walking and standing. “We don’t want anything to be constricting on the feet. It tends to cut off the circulation. We also want them to think about their diet. We don’t want them to consume a lot of sweets because we know our teenagers. they like to snack a lot. They need their carbohydrates. They need a meal in order to stand for long periods of time,“says Donna Kelly. Just 5 days to go now before the extravaganza in Washington. The key for this chorus hit the right notes and dress warm. “Even if you have to wear an extra pair of panty hose or some nice little socks that you’re going to have on make sure you won’t be so big and bulky…and have a great trip . Have a good time and we love you,” says Donna Kelly.
The Beach High Chorus has chosen 3 songs, including “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel” to sing in the competition. The students will also visit historical landmarks in Washington as an educational experience.
