The body of Marine Captain Matthew Freeman of Richmond Hill was returned today to his hometown.  Captain Freeman was killed in Afghanistan last week.  Groups of military, law enforcement and the Patriot Guard Riders escorted the body and family members from the National Guard Armory at the Savannah-Hilton Head Int’l Airport to the funeral home in Richmond Hill.  People showed their respect to the family and for Captain Freeman’s sacrifice by lining the streets along the way.  The motorcade was on Dean Forrest Road to Highway 17, south on 17 to Hwy 144 (Ford Avenue) and into Richmond Hill.  A wake is planned for Friday night.  Funeral services will be Saturday.  An “in-country” memorial for Captain Freeman will be held in Afghanistan by troops Saturday as well.

The story of the battle in which Captain Freeman died also reveals another hero from our area.  SPC Christopher Santiago Lowe, of Savannah, was wounded by gunfire while trying to save Captain Freeman.  He is currently recovering from his wounds in Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.  The full story is contained in the blog of SMSgt Rex Temple at this link.
