Election Day 2009

Virginia and New Jersey could both turn red today.

Both states voted Obama last year, but today their Democrats for Governor are struggling.

New Jersey’s Jon Corzine is trying to hold onto his seat by tapping the nearly half-million new voters there who backed Obama.

He’s neck-and-neck with Republican Chris Christie.

In Virginia, Republican Bob McDonnell came from behind and has a double-digit lead.

Democrat Creigh Deeds is walking a tightrope, trying to win Obama supporters, but distance himself.

“I support the President, but I’m my own guy,“ said Deeds.

President Obama campaigned for both Democrats, but analysts say Washington back-lash could work against them.

Newsweek Political Analyst Howard Fineman said, “The anti-tax, anti-big government message is the winning message for Republicans in the Obama era.“

In upstate New York, Democrats caught a break when a Republican dropped out and endorsed the Democrat against the conservative candidate.

And there’s a controversial question on Maine’s ballot today: whether to roll back the state’s same-sex marriage law.
