A LAW MEANT TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM LEAD PAINT IN TOYS HAS SOME MOTHERS UPSET. MANY SAY THE LAW GOES TOO FAR AND WILL END UP COSTING PARENTS LOTS OF MONEY. MEREDITH LAND HAS MORE.
JILL SCOTT IS A MOTHER OF FOUR. HER YOUNGEST, 6 MONTH OLD TRIPLETS!
“This is Logan, Ian, and Travis.“
SHE SPENDS 100 DOLLARS A WEEK ON FORMULA, 40 ON DIAPERS, SO ALL OF THEIR CLOTHES ARE BOUGHT AT CONSIGNMENT STORES.
“So these jeans here, Um, probably 3 dollars. I have a set limit. I don’t pay more than $5 for an item.“
JILL IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ACT THAT GOES INTO EFFECT FEBRUARY 10TH. ALL PRODUCT FOR KIDS UNDER 12 AND UNDER MUST UNDERGO LEAD TESTING BEFORE THEY ARE SOLD. THAT INCLUDES CLOTHING.
“Cost. I’m afraid that the other new clothes will be higher in price and if that’s the case, they get 5 outfits…that’s it.“
JILL SAYS MANY SECONDHAND STORES AND EBAYERS ARE WORRIED TOO. WILL THEY BE FORCED TO SHUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY CAN’T PAY FOR THE TESTING?
“Some of them have no clue as to what the law means and some have a wait and see approach.“
