Outpouring Of Support As A Hero Comes Home

A solemn and painful day as family members are escorted to the Statesboro Airport to welcome their hero home.  Sergeant Brock Chavers was killed in Afghanistan July 6th during a bomb blast while on combat patrol.  Members of The Patriot Guard Riders say Chavers deserves a special welcome home. “He is our brother.  Many of us are Veterans many Vietnam Veterans were not treated the way they should have been when they came home.  We want to make sure that never happens again in Georgia,“ says Gene Altman.  Silence along the tarmac as a small plane carrying Sergeant Chavers remains approached.
Family members faced a sight that clouded their minds and crushed their hearts.  Never alone, caring comrades and a loving community with them.  Family members held hands and walked up to their hero’s casket. Pain and tears filled their faces.  “My nephew said a prayer and I just absorbed it and I touched his casket.  I just felt like I needed to do that.” Loice Chavers says she’s overwhelmed with the outpouring of support.  “I know we loved him as a family and other people love him as well.  That gives me peace to know that other people feel our pain and they’re willing to share.“  “I would call him a great soldier.  He was NCO in the United States Army.  Our creed states that no one is more professional that I, and I think that is something he held true,“ says Jamie Chavers.  After the Army Honor Guard carried out its solemn duty lifting Chavers body into the hearse a procession to the mortuary began.  A fire truck’s ladder waved a huge flag overhead and people lined the streets with hands over their hearts… many carrying flags.  Once chavers body arrived at Hill’s Mortuary it was obvious that everyone realized it’s men and women like Sergeant Chavers that guarantee our freedom today.  “I’m so just so touched for what he’s done for us and what so many others have done to protect our freedom here for me and my family and all that we have.  I’m so thankful,“ says Julie Franklin. “I’m glad they’re out support this for the support we give the local community and the United States itself,“ says Brian Chavers.  The funeral for young Brock Chavers is set for Saturday on what would have been his 26th birthday.  Visitation is Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. at Hill Mortuary in Statesboro.  The funeral service is set for 2 P.M. Saturday at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Statesboro.  Burial will follow at Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
