Savannah Dodge On List To Close
Chrysler issued its list of almost 800 dealerships it plans to close. That list includes Savannah Dodge and Claxton Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep in Claxton, Ga. The nearest planned closings of dealers in South Carolina are in Charleston. Mark Medinger of Savannah Dodge says it certainly qualifies as a bad day but the dealership will appeal the closure.

Russ spoke with Dan Womack, the owner of Claxton Chrysler Dodge Jeep. He told Russ that he was “numb” after learning that his dealership is on the closing list and that it “feels almost like a death in the family.” Womack received a letter today from the company saying that it regrets the decision. Ironically, Womack says after a terrible year in 2008, sales have turned around this year and that sales objectives have been met every month so far in 2009. Womack has already contacted a lawyer and is planning to appeal the decision to close the dealership on June 9th. He says the dealership has been inundated with calls from people expressing their sympathy and concerns about the closing. 12 people are employed there.

Mark Medinger of Savannah Dodge says this qualifies as a bad day. This morning he was notified by letter that Chrysler, which is in bankruptcy, is recommending that his franchise not be picked up by the new company taking over (Fiat).
“It was a surprise since we are a high performing dealership,“ he says.
Medinger says there is an appeal process and he will definitely be asking for consideration from the new company. That process will take about a month to a month and a half.
Meanwhile, he says he is open for business as usual and that despite what happens with the franchise, that anything he sells will have a full warranty which can be serviced by any Chrysler dealer. More on News 3 at six.
