Savannah Holly Days

A winter wonderland on Broughton street.

Folks lining up for their chance to enjoy some Christmas fun just after Thanksgiving.

Its all part of the Savannah Holly days, a way to draw folks downtown to shop with local merchants, find some local products, have a glass of wine, and a good time.

But there was one spot more popular than the rest. The reason for the long line? An ice skating rink in the middle of the road.

“The whole ice skating outside on Broughton street its fun!“ said Trish Chavara.

Folks picked out the right pair, laced up their skates and slid out on the artificial rink. It was slow going at first. Eventually kids got braver, and sliding along smoothly.

As a big crowd gathered outside to watch the fun, parents just sat back and watched, smiling the entire time.

For Curt Mucienko, who’s from Florida, it’s a once in a lifetime chance.

“I’ve got it on video, I’ve got pictures and video mail so I can mail to her cousins,“ smiled proud dad Curt.

While some kids got the hang of skating right away, others took a spill or two. But they were all able to dust themselves off, get back up and start all over again.

It wasn’t just the kids having fun though, Trish and Lori hit the ice for a little fun too.

“Its all about the kids having a good time with their parents,“ said Alvin Dickerson, a parent himself. “And parents having a good time, parents acting like kids, acting like kids tonight.“

And if you didn’t want to act like a kid, there was always a chance to see some classic acting on a very big screen, the outside wall of Il Pasticchio.

Savannah Holly Day continues Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

There’s the skating rink on Broughton street, shopping tents set up along the way.

There’s even snow in Reynolds Square for the kids to play with, along with live music and entertainment all day long.

If you want to get up and out early, Santa will arrive at 9:15am to have milk and cookies with all the little ones.
