Talk about gracious manners. The city of
Charleston, S.C., is passing its long-standing title of “America’s
Most Mannerly City” to Southern rival Savannah.
Charleston ettiquette school owner Cindy Grosso, who compiles an
unscientific annual survey of the nation’s best mannered cities,
plans to present the award Thursday to Savannah’s mayor and city
council.
Savannah gets the recognition this year despite coming in a
distant second in the latest politeness survey, which ranked
Charleston at No. 1.
Grosso said Charleston, which has topped the best-mannered list
12 times, opted to give the title to runner-up Savannah.
Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson said Wednesday the title gives
credence to the Georgia city’s nickname: the Hostess City of the
South.
