Saying Good-bye to Captain Matthew Freeman
For those who knew him best, Captain Matthew Freeman was an incredible human being. One who loved life and lived it to the fullest. “He was an all around great guy in every way,“ says Freeman’s father-in-law James Hess. “Matthew was the Freeman’s son by birth and our son by marriage. When he gave his life for our country, he became Richmond Hill’s and America’s son.“
It was an emotional gathering for those who came to honor the hometown soldier. Many spoke of his love for his family, country, and his community.
“Those who knew Matthew well, know his passion, his fidelity, his faith… his love for his friends… his fellow human beings… and his willingness to share… but also for his willingness to lead,“ says Father Joe Smith.
Lee Ergle, a teacher at Richmond Hill High School shared reflections from the community by reading messages from some of his classmates. “I think above all,“ Ergle read, “Matthew would not only want us to remember him with ceremonies, memorials, ribbons, medals, and other nice things; but to remember him when you live your life as a free person in the country we call home.“
“Abraham Lincoln once said, I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives… I like to see a man live in which his place is proud of him.“
That’s how his loved ones hope Captain Freeman will be remembered. As family and friends mourn his death, they are also reminded to celebrate the life he lead as a dedicated family man, friend, and marine.
“And in this dark moment, I just want everyone to remember the light that was Matthew’s life and never forget it,“ Hesse says, “and thank God for Matthew’s life. “
Captain Freeman was a graduate of Richmond Hill High School and the Naval Academy. He was also a newlywed. He’d been married just three weeks before he was killed during a mission in Afghanistan. Captain Freeman was 29 years old.
