A tree falls on a house in Port Wenworth Friday afternoon, leaving a woman and her daughter without a home.

It happened around 3:00 p.m. at 313 Commonwealth Avenue.  The tree went right through the roof, destroying about 75 percent of the house, plus a Jeep that was in the driveway.

Luckily no one was hurt, but the house is no longer livable.  The good news - the homeowners have insurance.

One of the residents says she was folding laundry in her room, when her dog, Cowboy, started acting strangely.

She says the animal knocked her over, and then she felt the house rumbling.

“The house moves. My mind’s… I don’t know what I thought actually, so I go to run down the hall. My grandson’s bedroom door was closed, so I didn’t see that mess. Running down the hall, go to round the corner to go out the front door. The tree’s in the living room. He’s barking. He herds my mom’s little dog to the porch and our, and the cats that were there, to the porch,“ says Kim McNear.

McNear says they want to thank the Port Wentworth Fire and Police Departments for their help after the incident.

The home was built in the 1950’s by McNear’s grandparents. The family says the tree was there before the home was built.

The American Red Cross is helping the family with temporary shelter.
