Local students, Katherine Olson (Savannah Arts Academy) and Leekira Smith (Statesboro High School) are among 53 pupils chosen by State School Superintendent Kathy Cox to serve on Georgia’s 2009 - 2010 Student Advisory Council.
Two local high school students will soon have their say on issues affecting our school systems. Katherine Olson, a student at Savannah Arts Academy and Leekira Smith of Statesboro High School are among 53 pupils chosen by State School Superintendent Kathy Cox to serve on Georgia’s 2009 -2010 Student Advisory Council.
As members of the council, students will meet three times throughout the school year to advise Superintendent Cox on how state policies are having an impact in the classroom. The council will also discuss other education-related issues and will serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors in their respective schools.
More than 550 students from 108 districts applied to be a member of the Student Advisory Council by filling out an application and answering essay questions. Students were chosen based on the strength of their essay answers.
The first meeting of the Student Advisory Council will be held November 9 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
