SCCPSS received high accolades for excellence at the annual fall conference of the Georgia Council for Administration of Special Education (GCASE). Honors included: Educating students in the least restrictive environment and meeting state target by transitioning students to their desired postsecondary outcomes.

GCASE strives to give leadership and support to its members by providing input into the policies and practices in Georgia which impact the quality of education.  They are organized to promote professional, provide opportunity for study of problems common to its members, and to communicate through discussion and publications information that develop improved services for exceptional children.

Data from the 2007-2008 school year reflected the accomplishments of SCCPSS Department of Exceptional Children and their continued efforts to ensure the students with mild disabilities are taught in general education environments to the maximum extent possible.

“Of course, this recognition is very exciting. Our students have benefitted greatly from being educated in general education classrooms.  Everyone in our school system has worked very diligently for a number of years to accomplish this goal; it has taken great collaboration among many people to make this happen,” says Dr. Mikki Garcia, Director of the Department of Exceptional Children.

Since the 2002-2003 academic year, only 35% of SCCPSS students with disabilities were enrolled in general education environments for more than 80% of the day. Currently, that rate has more than doubled, as 83% of students with disabilities are educated in general education classrooms at least 80% of the day.
