Oglethorpe Charter School - overall the report is positive, including the areas of financial and academic accountability.  Students are scoring high in all subject areas, except science, which mirrors other schools across the district.

Susu Cox, District 1, and Greg Sapp, district 2, commend the school’s Principal, Kevin Wall, on a job well done.

Wall says Oglethorpe Charter has the best set-up of any charter school in the state in working with the local boards of education.  Board president, Joe Buck, is also pleased with how things are going at the school.  Dr. Thomas Lockamy, superintendent says he’s pleased with the relationship Oglethorpe Charter has with the school district.

Officials from Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School are not at the meeting.  They were invited to present the report back in May.  Lori Brady, district 6, says she’s extremely dissappointed that nobody showed up.  Board members want someone from the school to make a presentation at the November school board meeting.

Sandra Jenkins is the director for Savannah Gateway to College Academy.  The school opened last October.  Jenkins says during the last school year, they did not have to conduct a lottery and that they made space for everyone.  This year, however, they have a waiting list for enrollment.  Jenkins says they’ve gotten hundreds of applications.

The mission of Gateway to Collge is to help high school dropouts, ages 16-20, get back on track to get their diplomas.

5 of 7 students, or 71% have passed the graduation test.  The goal is for 74% percent of the students to pass the math portion of the test.  6 of 8 studnets passed, 75%.

Jenkins says they have an extended school year and that they school students during the summer so they don’t have to re-learn what was taught.
