SC Supreme Court to Hear Smoking Ban Challenges

The South Carolina Supreme Court is set to hear arguments that could determine whether municipal smoking bans around the state can stay put.

The justices were scheduled Wednesday to hear arguments from attorneys for the City of Greenville and owners of bars and restaurants.

City attorneys are appealing a circuit judge's ruling that a ban on indoor, public smoking is prohibited under state law. That ruling contradicted a judge's decision in favor of a similar ban in Sullivans Island.

There are about a dozen smoking bans in counties, cities and towns across South Carolina. The justices will hear arguments and issue a decision later.
