Georgia NAACP Holds Troy Davis Rally
An answer from the US Supreme Court on whether to take up Troy Anthony Davis' case could come any day now. Davis is on death row for the 1989 murder of Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail.
Saturday, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP sponsored a rally in support of Davis. They say it's an effort for Savannah to stand up for justice. The organization's president said it's vital for them to come together right now....each day is crucial.
"We came to the county where Troy Davis was actually sentenced so we could appeal to the community of Savannah that this is an innocent man and a man that should not be executed,” Edward Dubose said.
Earlier this week, Tina Tyus-Shaw spoke with family members on both sides as they waited for word on the case. First was Officer Macphail's wife, Joan, on the phone in Texas.
"We wait very patiently that the courts in Georgia have upheld the law and have done everything right by Troy and that they won't find anything wrong with the case itself and so they'll just say okay we can go back and set an execution date," she said.
"He has a strong family base. One thing about Troy is that he is very prayerful hopeful and he's standing on faith that something positive will happen from this,” Martina Correia, Davis' sister said.
