A three year battle…most would have just given up.  But a group of Sun City residents is not backing down.  They want their developer, Pulte Homes, to fix lagoon and stormwater drainage problems that they say are only getting worse.

Earlier this month about 500 Sun City neighbors stated their case to Pulte Homes and the Ocean and Coastal Resource Management/ Department of Health and Environmental Control.  THat day, the developer told the group that the problems would be fixed.  Most walked away happy.  However, one man is fearful DHEC won’t hold Pulte accountable and the mess will continue.

It’s the carefree-type lifestyle Rick McCollough had in mind when he thought retirement.
But for the last 17 months it’s the Sun City lagoons taking up most of his time.

“We didn’t come here to Sun City to spend our time trying to get the developer to do these things and fix what they should have done in the first place,“ McCollough said.

He says much of the problem stems from the depth of the lagoons—or lack thereof.  Developer plans, which DHEC approved, made for lagoons to be five feet deep, but most are not, which can make for poor water quality.  The repercussions, McCollough fears, could be costly.

“If Pulte doesn’t fix the problems with these lagoons, the residents are going to have to pay for them.  And that means an increase in our annual assesments and residents don’t need that given the economy we have right now,“ he said.

So earlier this month, Pulte listened to concerns from neighbors and announced they would make this thing right; many saw this as major progress.  But McCollough’s not drifting away from this ordeal just yet, he wants the full-job done right…and hopes D-HEC will hold Pulte to it.

“We’re not here to get Pulte fined, we’re not here to hurt anybody.  All we want are these problems fixed. Then everyone will be much happier,“ McCollough said.
WSAV left messages with OCRM and Pulte Friday to seek a status update. None of the messages were returned before deadline.
