Five Hunter AAF Soldiers Killed in Chopper Crash
HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga.—Defense officials released the identities of seven soldiers killed in Afghanistan this week. Five of the dead were stationed at Hunter Army Airfield.
The Department of Defense said the soldiers died Monday when the MH-47 helicopter they were in crashed.
Five of the dead were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne) at Hunter Army Airfield. They are identified as Chief Warrant Officer Michael P. Montgomery, 36, of Savannah; Chief Warrant Officer Niall Lyons, 40, of Spokane, Wash.; Staff Sgt. Shawn H. McNabb, 24, of Terrell, Texas; Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez Chavez, 23, of Reno, Nev.; and Sgt. Nikolas A. Mueller, 26, of Little Chute, Wisc.
Two Fort Bragg, NC soldiers assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) were also killed. Defense officials identified them as Sgt. 1st Class David E. Metzger, 32, of San Diego, California, and Staff Sgt. Keith R. Bishop, 28, of Medford, New York.
