USO Savannah Spends Day Helping Troops
USO Savannah Helps Soldiers on Thanksgiving
USO Savannah Helps Soldiers on ThanksgivingThey are there to see the troops off and welcome them when they come home… but the USO here in Savannah does even more than that.
News Three’s Alice Massimi was there as this Thanksgiving volunteers provided our nations heroes with some comforts of home.
In the sea of holiday travelers it’s easy to spot the soldiers… some are coming home…but most are heading out.
“We are here for the troops as they come through, whatever we can do lend an ear, lend a shoulder, give them a piece of advice, help them check their bags,” explains Dick Falcone.
Falcone and his wife, Janice, head up a crew of close to 100 volunteers at USO Savannah’s airport location.
Some days are hectic… others are slow… but either way these volunteers give their all.
“What’s your favorite part?”
“The soldiers… just helping out and being here to answer questions for them or do anything we can to help them,” says Janice.
“Whatever little thing we can do for these kids, the men and women who are serving our country is the most gratifying,” adds Dick.
Especially on Thanksgiving Day… a day usually spent with family and friends.
“We and another neighbor baked 3 turkeys yesterday. We cut them up last night and made turkey sandwiches on croissants. We are going to serve them chips and a variety of pies,” points out Dick showing me a cooler full of sandwiches.
Much appreciated by this soldier, too bashful to talk on camera, he was headed back to Afghanistan.
“At 10 o’clock we already had one boy come back from Iraq who was hungry. His day and nights were mixed up and he said I’m ready to eat.”
Not only are the troops getting some good eats on Thanksgiving Day but every day they the USO provides them a place to unwind and relax.
Small gestures many troops will say mean so much… especially during the holidays.
The USO is always looking for volunteers and donations.
