Witnesses testfied today that an Army sergeant charged with murder shouted “My career’s over, just kill me,“ as soldiers pinned him to the ground after he shot and killed two fellow U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war.  Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division helped lead the charge into Iraq on March 20, 2003, and many have paid the ultimate price for it.

As 2008 comes to an end, U.S. military deaths have plunged in Iraq, but risen sharply in Afghanistan. The Associated Press tally puts the death toll among U.S. personnel in Iraq at 314. That’s down from 904 in 2007, a drop of nearly two-thirds. In all, at least 4,221 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq since the war began in 2003.
