Obama team releases internal report on Blagojevich contacts.
Published: December 24, 2008
Continuing his family vacation in Hawaii, the President-elect had no comment on the report.
But aides say it puts to rest questions over whether Mister Obama and his advisers had any improper contact with Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, accused of seeking favors in exchange for Obamas vacant senate seat.
Back in Washington, Vice President-elect, Joe Biden offered his take.
“There has been no inappropriate contact by any member of the Obama staff or the transition team with Blagojevich,” said Biden.
The written report details at least one phone call between future White House Chief Of Staff Rahm Emmanuel and Blagojevich.
It shows there were conversations but none by the President and no wrongdoing by his staff.
“My guess is, and it’s only a guess, that they were pretty careful in their discussion with Governor Blagojevich because he was radioactive, quite frankly, even before the arrest,” said Better Government Association’s Jay Stewart.
In fact the biggest headline in the report may be the fact that Obama himself met with the Federal Prosecutor last week and even listened to some of the Governor’s taped conversations.
Meantime prosecutors also weighed in today on the Illinois legislature’s consideration of impeachment for Blagojevich, saying at this point that could interfere with the federal case.
But while the investigation continues, Obama aides say the report now takes the heat off the future president, allowing him to enjoy more fun in the sun.
