Delivery Day For Mom Fighting Breast Cancer
Woman With Breast Cancer Has Twins
Connie Helton had a mastectomy in August. She's overcome many hurdles and finally had twins today.
(Savannah) A celebration of new life from a mother fighting to beat a killer. “We’re not in control you know. Breast cancer wasn’t my idea. Twins, you know, that was a surprise to us.“ That’s right, while fighting for her life, Connie Helton will soon give life - she’s expecting twins, a boy and a girl. The babies haven’t made it this far without their mother enduring a tough journey. Diagnosed with breast cancer in August, Connie is strong, pulling through her mastectomy and overcoming emotional hurdles. As Connie prepares for delivery, her Oncologist Dr. Mark Taylor briefs her and husband Chris about chemotherapy treatment.
“Her immune system should be fine and the babies themselves shouldn’t pose any risk while she’s getting chemo,“ says Dr. Mark Taylor. “I’m sure there’s struggles and joys of raising twins in itself, and then in the back of my mind I’m thinking oh I’m going to have chemo, but you know I realize that I do have a great support system,“ says Connie. The same support that’s helped them get to this point. “Getting 2 healthy babies out of today is my main focus today,“ says Connie. Ironically, the same day their Oncologist’s baby was born a year ago. A memory to treasure. “In years to come while we celebrate her survivorship we’ll be able to say ok, it’s their birthday…all of them,“ says Dr. Taylor. Connie will begin chemotherapy in a week or two. He says the Heltons’ great frame of mind and support from family and friends will help them get through the challenges ahead. After being in labor for more than 7 hours, Connie gave birth just after 3pm. Christopher Junior weighs 6.5 pounds. Susannah Grace weighs 6.7 pounds. The babies and momma are doing well.
