At least 425 people have been killed, and 270,000 have been driven from their homes. Thousands of acres of cropland were destroyed.

The mudslides of October 1999 became the worst disaster to hit the country in 40 years.

And many say the government didn’t respond quickly enough.

When it comes to tornadoes, you can’t always see them coming.

Vegetation, rain, time of day and air quality all impact the visibility.

Today in Glynn County, the public reported seeing a tornado near Jekyll Island. In this thunderstorm, excessive rainfall was falling, which would make it difficult for many to even see the tornado. This can the situation even more dangerous. Because if you can’t see something coming, you may not take action.

We are now winding down July 2009, and we haven’t even had our first tropical storm!!! The Atlantic Hurricane season is dead…at least for now.

We haven’t had a tropical storm, a tropical depression or even a strong tropical wave. It’s just amazing.

The atmosphere just can’t seem to get going, and there’s nothing on the horizon for the beginning of August. This means the first two months of the season will end with NO activity.

So why is this happening?
Well, experts say there are two main reasons.

An impressive waterspout was spotted this morning by the Tybee Island Ocean Rescue. The photo of the waterspout was taken by Lt. Todd Horne.

Waterspouts are basically tornadoes over water. They can have winds speeds up to 190mph, so they shouldn’t be taken lightly. They actually can be quite dangerous.

Some experts say that “a significant fraction of the so-called Bermuda Triangle incidents are from waterspouts.“

So…if you’re out in the water on a boat, would you know what to do if a waterspout formed? Here’s what to do.

It’s Lightning Safety Awareness Week, and today’s topic is all about lightning safety outdoors.

During the summer, we all tend to take advantage of the warm weather…boating, swimming, fishing, bicycling, golfing, jogging, walking, hiking, camping or working outdoors. It’s fun, but we all need to play it safe too.

Being outdoors when thunderstorms are nearby involves risk, and certain locations are worse than others. Last year in the United States, those who were struck by lightning and then died…100 percent happened outside. Nearly 32% occurred under a tree, 29% on beaches or water, another 29% in open fields, and about 10% in unsafe pavilions or open shelters.

It’s Lightning Awareness Week, and I realize it may not be all that exciting to some…but it should be.

I have seen firsthand what lightning can do. I even have a friend who has been struck twice. Where’s the luck there, right?

Well, more than o1000 people get struck by lightning each year in the United States, and more than 100 of them die as a result of the strike.

For hundreds and hundreds of years, sailors have been telling stories of encountering monstrous ocean waves, which tower over one hundred feet in the air and toss ships about like corks.

In the past, oceanographers discounted these reports as tall tales—-just embellished stories of mariners with too much time at sea.

But not anymore.

“I’ve flown in some storms, but that day was the worse that I’d seen.“—Frank Flood

Here in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, we rarely ever seen snow. So when it does fall, it’s quite an occasion. Well just up the coast, the situation isn’t all that different.

On Thursday, January 23, 2003, unusually harsh winter weather moved over North Carolina’s intracoastal waterway. An Arctic blast spawned a storm system along the edge of the Gulf Stream, and it produced one of the heaviest snowfalls to ever hit North Carolina’s coast. It’s a snowfall that brought Elizabeth City’s 17-thousand residents to a standstill.

It’s a storm that caused problems onshore and off.

It’s getting to be that time of year when thunderstorms fire up almost every single day. While not every thunderstorm becomes “severe,“ every thunderstorm is dangerous.

Just yesterday, I was tracking a storm cell in the Jasper and Beaufort County area. Within just an hour, our Live Titan Radar tracked nearly 700 lightning strikes. And these lightning strikes caused their share of problems.

According to our media partner The Island Packet, firefighters across Beaufort County stayed very busy. A Blufton man was struck by lightning but wasn’t seriously injured. We are told the man was standing next to a tree.

In another incident, Bluffton Township Fire District firefighters battled a blaze in Belfair Plantation on Manchester Court. That fire was likely started by a lightning strike and destroyed the home’s attic, Lt. Robert Payne said. Investigators were on the scene Tuesday night to determine the cause of the blaze, but the home is likely a total loss, he said.

Some of these problems are unavoidable. But there are things you can do to stay safe.

It’s a claim that sounds like a scene out of a sci-fi thriller. But these scientists say they have proof.

Folks in Alabama are cleaning up today after severe storms struck the area this past weekend. It’s confirmed that an EF-0 tornado with 75 mph winds hit in Shelby County’s Brook Highlands community. But it’s another weather phenomeon, called a derecho, that also caused its share of damage.

A derecho is a widespread and long-lived straight line wind storm associated with a fast-moving squall line, and it produces winds stronger than 58mph.

For some folks, it’s the most exciting two minutes in sports. Who will win the Kentucky Derby?

Only 3-year-old thoroughbreds run for the roses, so a horse only gets one shot.

Just about anything can determine the outcome of a horse race, such as the weather, equipment changes, jockey changes or starting positions. Even the crowd can have an affect on the horses. But out of all these, it’s weather that’s getting the most attention this time around.

A stalled front will keep the weather rather unsettled in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday with periods of rain.

A Lawrence, Kansas, man died this past Saturday after he was struck by a bolt of lightning as he and six companions rode their motorcycles through a rainstorm, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.

Troy Gentzler, 45, was killed shortly after visiting an abuse victim for the northeast Kansas chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse.

The bolt struck as the group was traveling between the towns of Grantville and Perry.

“You can sum it up in one word: bizarre,“ Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig told the newspaper.

An out-of-control woods fire is raging in Horry County, South Carolina. This is a coastal county that includes one of the state’s most popular tourist spots, Myrtle Beach.

While this particular fire is unusual, it’s actually not unusual to see more fires this time of year. In spring and early summer, we all want to get outdoors to either have a good time or simply just work in the yard. Grass burning and spring cleanup fires occasionally escape control and result in wildfires. When summer arrives, the number of people in the woods increases and as they travel, recreationalists can accidentally cause fires.

Now most of us have no intention of setting a fire that could burn hundreds of homes, millions of acres of forest and affecting thousands of lives. Each year, however, we learn of devastating wildfires caused by careless behavior.
Examples of ways YOU could unintentionally start a wildfire

Earth Day has been observed on April 22nd for 40 years now. And when it comes to making a difference, every single human being can decrease production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by thousands of pounds each year.

To do this not only saves our planet, but it can save you money. Examples include not driving so fast or ditching the car completely. Think of what you could save on gas alone!

But when it comes to celebrities…saving money isn’t always the motivation.

For Las Vegas, flash flood season runs from July through September.

Flash flooding has caused millions of dollars in damage in recent years. In August of 2004 and January of 2005, the Las Vegas Valley experienced flash flooding with areas sustaining heavy damage.

Another disasterous and damaging flood hit the northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley on August 19, 2003, causing millions of dollars in damage. Brief but intense thunderstorms flooded parts of the city, creating harrowing scenes in which police helicopters skirted power lines to pluck stranded motorists from the rushing water.

Magee, MS - A strong tornado has left Maegan Errington with more than the usual case of jitters for a bride-to-be.

National Weather Service officials say at least five tornadoes struck Mississippi before early Thursday morning, injuring at least 20 people and damaging more than 60 buildings, including Errington’s church and a water treatment plant.

Hardest hit on Thursday was the town of Magee, where the tornado tore through the city’s outskirts. Officials say the winds reached up to 150 miles an hour, and debris was found as far away as Garlandville, which is nearly 50 miles northeast of Magee.

“I was worried about rain. I wasn’t worried about losing the church,“ said a tearful Errington, 23, who pulled on cowboy boots and a camouflage cap against the last rain of a passing severe storm front to survey the damage of Thursday’s pre-dawn storm.

The topic of my blog today… the connection between soil
moisture and potential impact and length of summer heat waves.

Clear as Mud: Forecast Pressure

“Given the weather forecast we had—and we had monitored it over and over again—it was a decision that we made. And obviously I made it with some significant trepidation, but had the forecast held, we would have been okay.“ ——Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, after Game 5 of the World Series in Philadelphia between the Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays was postponed due to rain—the first time in history a World Series game was suspended.

Ouch. I wouldn’t want to be the meteorologist called out on this one. I get enough slack from WSAV News 3’s Russ Riesinger on his game days!

Looking for something cool to do this weekend? Head on out to the Oatland Island Wildlife Center’s Sheep to Shawl Festival! I’ll be there working in the afternoon and taking my kids around to all of the activities.

The festival will feature the shearing of Oatland’s sheep by members of The Fiber Guild of Savannah. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in many activities including carding, spinning and weaving. The Guild will offer a chance to win a one-of-a-kind hand woven shoulder wrap shawl in a raffle to be held at 3p.m.

Weather-Related Plane Crashes

In what can only be described as a tragic day for aviation, a total of 16 people were killed in two unrelated plane crashes over the last 24 hours, one in Montana and one in Japan.

Is it just me or does it seem like plane crashes are all over the news these days? Maybe it’s the intrigue of the plane crash on the Hudson River? Regardless, I know the headlines catch my eye, and I wonder how much weather plays a part.

Tsunami…a series of waves that is created when a large volume of a body of water, such as an ocean, gets rapidly displaced. Ever want to know just how deadly and dangerous these waves can be, just think back to the 2004 Sri Lanka tsunami. Those are visions I will never get out of my head.

Well, tsunamis are back in the news today. An underwater volcano out in the South Pacific Ocean set off a strong earthquake on the main island of Tonga. This then set off a tsunami warning. The warning was cancelled only two hours later, but the threat is still fresh in everyone’s mind. So I thought it was pretty cool when I stumbled upon this latest invention…Tsunami Invisibility Cloaks.
