Screven County broke ground on a new animal sholter that will be built by prisoners and paid for with sales tax money.

In front of a standing-room-only crowd, members of the Screven County County Commission unanimously agreed Tuesday to begin building a new animal shelter.

Some dogs do more than serve as pets…they actually work to provide important services to others.  Those dogs include seeing eye dogs, search and rescue dogs, and police k-9 among others.  This week the American Veterinary Medical Association is giving back to them with free eye exams.

Two brothers from Seabrook were arrested Tuesday by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office on charges of ill treatment of animals after deputies found 10 malnourished dogs at their Delaney Circle home.

The Liberty County Humane Shelter is a national finalist in a makeover contest.
