NEW YORK (AP) — Gasoline markets showed the first signs this week that an extended rally in pump prices is nearing an end after 52 straight days of price increases.

Oil prices surged again Wednesday to a new high for the year with investors pouring money into crude markets as a hedge against inflation.

HOUSTON (AP) — While crude settled above $70 a barrel for the first time this year, gasoline prices failed to rise overnight for the first time in 42 days, signaling a possible break for motorists as summer driving shifts into high gear.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Oil prices took a dive Wednesday after a government report on unused crude in storage suggested the monthlong rally in energy prices may have been premature.

After increasing 10 cents over the past month, gasoline prices in North and South Carolina have stabilized and are unlikely to increase dramatically for the Easter holiday weekend.

AAA reports the average statewide price for a gallon of regular has risen about 11 cents in the past month.

Retail gas prices across Georgia and South Carolina are on the rise after OPEC cut oil production, sending prices higher.  Parts of Savannah and the Lowcountry have already seen eight to ten cent increases.

Georgians can celebrate a reduction in the state’s gasoline tax as they welcome the New Year.  But it will mean less revenue for transportation projects.

Georgia’s gas tax is four cents lower in 2009…but all 50 states could soon see an increase in the federal gas tax.
