Super Bowl Weather History and Forecast
Sunday marks another chapter in Super Bowl history. The game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals will played in Tampa, Florida. So lets take a look at weather history as it relates to past Super Bowl games.
Of the past 42 Super Bowls… 29 have been played out of doors.
It snowed for 2 Super Bowls… but both games were indoors in a dome stadium. The years were 1982 and 2006. The location… Detroit and Pontiac, Michigan. And speaking of really cold temperatures… the daytime high was 16 and the low was 5 out of doors for the 1982 game.
The coldest air temperature for an outside Super Bowl since 1967 was in 1972 when the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins played in New Orleans. The high temperature was only 43.
If you remember back to 2000… the Super Bowl in Atlanta (inside the Georgia Dome) was played while an ice storm was in progress outside. One fourth to one half an inch of ice was recorded that day at the Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport.
16 of the 42 Super Bowls had rain recorded during the 24 hour period surrounding the game.
And as far as the warmest Super Bowls… twice the temperature reached 82 degrees. The Super Bowl dates were 1973 and 2003.
The weather should be dry for this year’s Super Bowl. The forecast brings mostly sunny skies Sunday for Tampa with a high of 67. Skies should be fair during the game with temps running from 60 to 65. Great weather for this year’s players and spectators!
