Go Green This July 4th
The holiday weekend is almost here, and July 4th is a time we tend to throw caution to the wind…take a moment to relax…and enjoy the long weekend and celebrate our country’s Independence.
That doesn’t mean that in our celebration we should forget about the environment.
There are some ways you can go green and enjoy and eco-friendly July 4th.
Green living is supposed to become a habit, a way of life and even something you do at parties.
First is food.
To stay eco-friendly, purchase food from your local farmer’s market. You can usually get all sorts of fresh fruit and produce, that’s great for grilling, salad and desert needs.
Second is dishware.
Many of us tend to use paper or plastic dishware. Unfortunately, it stands to do the most damage to the environment. Instead, use real glassware, plates and silverware. This will greatly reduce the amount of waste.
Third is lighting.
Solar lamps and lighting can set the mood for an outdoor celebration. Even tiki-torches will work.
And finally…fourth is fireworks.
Experts have tried to develop eco-friendly fireworks, but there’s nothing yet available. The best thing is to not have fireworks. Now I know that isn’t so much fun, so consider watching a big fireworks display like on Tybee, the Sand Gnats game or downtown Savannah.
So this July 4th…go ahead and wear your red, white and blue…but don’t forget to also go green!!
