As colleges across the country get ready for spring break, there’s a major warning for students.
The U.S. State Department is telling travelers that Mexico’s recent rash of violence could make that country unsafe for tourists.
It’s that time of year when Mexican beaches and bars are usually filled with American college students.
But this year, the streets of Mexico are filled with something else- violence
In recent weeks gun battles have raged in many border towns and police have been killed in broad daylight as the Mexican government tries to rein in out of control drug cartels
“They are confronting each other and the result is a significant level of violence,“ said David Johnson with the State Department.
In an official travel advisory, the U.S. State Department warns that innocents could be caught in the crossfire.
So universities across America are warning students.
“You’ve really got to look where you are going and what the history is. And talk to some people with the travel company or whatever that really know the area,“ said Washington University’s Tom Schwrich.
Travel agents do point out the usual resort towns have, been away from the worst of the violence.
And the Mexican government insists visitors will be safe
“I think it’s safe to go things happen everywhere and the same holds true for Mexico.“ said Ricardo Alday a spokesman for the Embassy of Mexico.
But for many students, the risk isn’t worth the reward and this year, they plan to find their fun in the sun somewhere else.
