Cold Weather Ends

Well, it was only a matter of time.  Problem is, this moment hasn’t come soon enough for most.

The start of 2010 in southeastern South Carolina and southeastern Georgia has been characterized by a long duration period of abnormally cold temperatures.  Despite the duration of the cold, no record temperatures have been broken.

Looking back at records for extended periods of cold weather, the present stretch of low temperatures at or below 30 degrees is tied for the longest streak at the Savannah Airport.

Tonight, twelve new Green Sea Turtles were rescued by the Jekyll Island Authority and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center from Florida due to the cold weather.

Turtles Saved from the Cold
Turtles Saved from the Cold

Yesterday, nearly 100 sea turtles found floating were rescued from the Mosquito Lagoon in Florida after cold water shocked their tropically inclined systems. Tonight at 8 pm the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Ga. will be receiving ten of these cold stunned sea turtles for treatment and rehabilitation.
